2015-12-15 Update
As mentioned in Safe Browsing Tips, I have moved away from AdBlock Plus and now recommend AdBlock Edge or better yet uBlock Origin due to ABP “selling” access to get on their default whitelist.
Background
This article provides more detail on what AdBlock Plus (ABP) is and how to use it. For a brief overview, see Safe Browsing Tips.
ABP is a firefox extension that provides the following features:
- Block annoying ads automatically, no distractions
- Browse faster and safer
- Fully customizable - you are in control
- Easy to contribute, report issues when you see them

I’ve had great luck with ABP “just working”, and generally not even noticing it is there. I make no changes to ABP, simply install it and forget about it. Upon install it does add a Menu>Tools
entry if you need to check or change something but as I stated earlier, I generally do not touch it.
As mentioned before, ABP just works and you don’t need to change or do anything. You may notice a little red stop sign looking icon in your menu bar with a ABP inside it. This icon allows you to quickly change or configure ABP if needed. I tend to remove the icon from the menu bar as I rarely, if ever, need to change anything.
